Rejuvenate Your Smile!

Sometimes there are enough problems with a mouth that we may suggest smile rejeuvenation, a combination of restorative techniques such as bonding and veneers, gingival recontouring or neuromuscular analysis. The result is nothing short of a reconstruction of your whole mouth, and you walk away feeling happy and healthy in just a few visits.

Full-mouth reconstruction may sound daunting, but it really isn’t. It does not involve surgery, but integrates a whole range of restorative techniques to fix as many problems as possible, all at once.

Full mouth reconstruction can involve:
• Veneers/Bonding
• Gingival recontouring
• Porcelain/composite fillings
• Occlusion work (bite)

Basically, we get your whole mouth working right in just a few visits!

No more amalgam fillings!

Are your teeth sensitive to hot or cold? Or do they show small cracks or graying? Chances are that your amalgam fillings are at least partly to blame. Today there are literally billions of amalgam fillings out there protecting people’s teeth, but that protection may come at a cost. The toxic element mercury is one of the primary components of dental amalgam, and is still used by over 92% of dentists. Mercury is used to keep the amalgam soft so that it can be shaped to fit the cavity in the tooth.

The cause for concern stems from what happens to mercury once it has been placed in the tooth. Studies show that about two-thirds of the mercury in a person’s body originates from amalgam. While it isn’t entirely clear what effect that level of mercury has, for those concerned about their health, being rid of amalgam is one less thing to worry about.

Apart from elevated mercury levels, amalgam fillings are made of metal, which expands and contracts at different rates. This leads to hot and cold sensitivity, as well as cracking and graying. And it isn’t at all uncommon for Dr. Hunsaker to find old amalgam fillings that have decay surrounding them, even after having been placed for only a few years (see right). Often dentists will simply replace these with another, slightly larger amalgam filling, which poses significant risk to the health of the tooth. But with the advent of new composite technologies, the era of amalgam fillings will be coming to an end. Windsong Dental Arts is proud to be on the forefront in offering this revolutionary and safe method to our clients. Some wonder whether removing a filling doesn’t do more harm than leaving it untouched. We use the proper precautions for removing old fillings, and the replacement composite filling not only strengthens the tooth, it is virtually invisible.

And let’s face it: amalgam fillings just look bad. After a few years the silver oxidizes (tarnishes) and turns black. Who wants a bunch of black spots in their mouth? The combined disadvantages of amalgam in comparison with our top-quality composite technologies, make replacing amalgam fillings a great way to improve your smile, strengthen your teeth and possibly even improve your health!

Say Goodbye to Drills.

No more visions of Dr. Frankenstein at the dentist’s office! Air abrasion dentistry alleviates the need for just about all of the things you had nightmares about as a kid – the noise, the odor, the vibration, and worst of all, the shot. New technologies insure that you can avoid the apprehension many of us have experienced over years of visits to the dentist. And no pain means no anxiety.

The procedure is simple: Air abrasion uses an ultra-thin stream of compressed air and aluminum oxide particles, which gently remove the decayed area of your tooth – and nothing else. In the old days a lot of healthy tooth structure had to be removed because the drill was so big in comparison, and the old amalgam fillings needed a basin with cusped edges to keep it in place.

Often air abrasion removes so little of the tooth that the filling is extremely small. The cavity is filled with a tooth-colored composite filling that bonds to the tooth, offering strength, longevity and virtual invisibility.

Air abrasion is very safe, too – it can be used on small children and pregnant women. Anesthetic is needed only in rare cases where a little pain might be experienced. Once you’ve tried it, you’ll see the wisdom of regular checkups – problems caught early are easy to treat, and you can say goodbye to the drill!

Do you need Neuromuscular Dentistry?

Next time you break open the pain killer for your headache, consider that your bite may be at fault. Neuromuscular Dentistry can put you on the road to a pain-free future!

Any of the following can be symptoms of TMD:
• Headaches or sinus pain
• Unexplained loose teeth
• Worn, chipped or cracked teeth
• Cracked, chipped or broken restorations
• Migrating tooth pain or sensitivity
• Neck, shoulder or back pain
• Facial pain, especially around the eyes
• Clicking or grating sounds in the jaw joints
• Limited movement or locking jaw
• Numbness in fingers and arms
• Congestion or stuffiness of the ears
• Snoring
• Vertigo
• Pain around the Temporomandibular Joint (the jaw joints)

TMD/TMJ Migraine Connection

At any given time as many as 75 million Americans suffer from various disorders relating to their occlusion, or “bite.” Patients and providers are often confused by the wide range of symptoms. This often results in many unnecessary medical and dental office visits and much unnecessary treatment, with the associated increased cost, not to mention the frustration. The problem is that few health professionals really pay much attention to Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMD) and its pervasiveness, and few dentists are trained to practice Neuromuscular Dentistry. Neuromuscular Dentistry could be exactly what you need if you experience one or more of the problems listed above. By studying how the jaw moves and how the teeth rest against each other when the mouth is closed, Neuromuscular Dentist Dave Hunsaker can determine whether your muscles come to rest properly. If they do not, he can analyze and literally “reset” your bite to a more optimal rest position using sophisticated, non-invasive and painless electronic instrumentation.

Our first goal in the practice of Neuromuscular Dentistry is to find the three- dimensional position of the jaw where the muscles are relaxed and at rest. We can also record full movements of the jaw and record jaw joint sounds to help detect abnormalities. Every person has unique jaw and muscle physiology, so neuromuscular diagnosis and treatment is a custom science that involves careful study of an individual’s oral history and health. Dr. Hunsaker invests in state-of-the-art technology, including these 3D tools:

[photo] A computerized mandibular scan (CMS) provides precise 3-dimensional information about your jaw movement.

[photo] Electrosonography (ESG) detects the sounds of your jaw joints and sends the information to a computer for analysis.

[photo] Surface electromyography (SEMG) measures the small electrical signals emitted by your muscles to determine their most relaxed state.

The results of Neuromuscular Dentistry can be nothing less than life changing. Having a perfect bite is critical for preventing uneven tooth wear, preserving veneers or other restorations, or simply feeling good – now and for the rest of your life! Next time you break open the painkiller for your headache, consider that your bite may be at fault. Neuromuscular Dentistry can put you on the road to a pain-free future!

Veneers… Beautify your teeth.

You can enjoy a perfect smile in as few as two visits! If you already have relatively good dental health and simply want to improve your appearance, veneers may be the best solution. Typically made of porcelain, veneers are bonded to your teeth using a safe, high-technology polymer resin. The results are nothing short of amazing. Since each veneer is individually sculpted to match each tooth, even an experienced dentist will have to get very close to tell your perfect smile isn’t inherited. You can expect your veneers to stay bright and strong for many years simply by following standard good oral hygiene practices.

A few facts about veneers:

They won’t discolor with age, as normal teeth do

They require minimal modification to existing teeth

Veneers can make dark or stained teeth brighter

Minor overlaps and small gaps disappear

They appear as normal teeth – you can’t tell the difference!

Veneers are super high quality porcelain, and are very stain resistant

Also known as “instant orthodontics,” veneers can actually help strengthen existing teeth

Whitening Your Teeth

Nine out of ten people believe a smile is one of their most important social assets, and 3 out of 4 feel that a good smile enhances their chances of job success. Are you making the most of your smile? Many don’t, simply because their teeth are darkened by age, smoking, or simple genetics. The good news is that most tooth enamel can be easily returned to a sparkling white. Windsong Dental Arts offers two choices to brighten your smile, depending on Dr. Hunsaker’s evaluation of your needs:
